Adjustable dumbbell
A single dumbbell that changes weight with a dial, pin or twist handle, replacing a full rack of fixed weights in one small footprint.

Air resistance
Resistance from a fan that gets harder the faster you push. Effective for intervals but loud, so check noise before using one above neighbours.

Bumper plate
A weight plate made of dense rubber so it can be dropped from overhead without damaging the floor or bar. All bumper plates in a set usually share the same diameter.

Footprint
The floor area a machine occupies while in use. For folding equipment also check the stored footprint and the height when folded.
Impact noise
Sound and vibration that travel through the floor when weights drop or feet land. Thick rubber flooring reduces it far more than a thin yoga mat.
Loop band
A closed rubber resistance band used around the legs or arms for activation and mobility work. Bands are rated by colour, but resistance varies between brands.

Magnetic resistance
Resistance created by magnets near a flywheel without contact. It is quieter than friction or air resistance, which matters in apartments.

Olympic bar
A barbell with 2 inch (50mm) rotating sleeves. The standard men's bar weighs 20kg / 44 lbs and the women's bar 15kg / 33 lbs.

Plyo box
A sturdy box for jumps, step-ups and elevated exercises. Soft foam boxes are safer for beginners and quieter to land on.

Power rack
A four-post steel cage with adjustable safety bars that catch a failed lift, letting you squat and bench alone. Folding and wall-mounted versions save floor space.

Power tower
A freestanding station for pull-ups, dips and knee raises. It needs ceiling height for pull-ups, so measure before buying.

Progressive overload
Gradually increasing weight, reps or difficulty over time so the body keeps adapting. Equipment with small weight jumps makes it easier at home.
Standard plate
A plate with a 1 inch hole that fits standard, non-Olympic bars. Standard and Olympic plates are not interchangeable.
Suspension trainer
Adjustable straps anchored to a door, beam or rack for bodyweight rows, push-ups and core work. It packs into a small bag.
