Magnetic resistance
Resistance created by magnets near a flywheel without contact. It is quieter than friction or air resistance, which matters in apartments.
Magnetic resistance uses magnets positioned close to a spinning flywheel to create drag through a magnetic field rather than physical contact, unlike a friction pad that rubs against the wheel or a fan that resists air. Because nothing is touching, there is no pad to wear out or squeal over time.
This matters for shared walls and floors because magnetic systems are among the quietest resistance types for indoor bikes and rowers, which is why many apartment-friendly cardio machines are built around them rather than air or plain friction resistance.
When buying, check the number of resistance levels and how evenly they are spaced, whether the bike is app-connected if you want structured programs, and the flywheel weight, since a heavier flywheel usually feels smoother at low resistance. A common mistake is assuming every bike marketed as quiet uses magnetic resistance, when some still rely on friction pads that get louder as they wear. The product spec sheet, not the marketing copy, is usually the only place that states the resistance type plainly.
