Walking pad
A compact, usually handrail-free treadmill built for walking speeds, often used under a standing desk and stored flat under a sofa or bed.
A walking pad is a thin, low-profile treadmill designed for walking rather than running, typically without the tall handrail console of a standard treadmill. That low profile is what lets it slide under a standing desk during work hours or under furniture for storage, which a full-size folding treadmill usually cannot match.
For apartments, the appeal is a small stored footprint and a flatter motor housing, though the tradeoff is a lower top speed and no incline on most models, and the belt is narrower and shorter than a running treadmill's.
When buying, check belt length and width against your stride, the motor's noise rating, weight capacity, and how it handles being used on carpet versus a hard floor. A common mistake is placing one on thick carpet or an uneven surface, which is a leading cause of the belt slipping or drifting to one side during use rather than any fault in the machine itself. Placing a thin rubber mat underneath on carpet often fixes the drift without buying a different unit.
