Standard plate
A plate with a 1 inch hole that fits standard, non-Olympic bars. Standard and Olympic plates are not interchangeable.
A standard plate has a 1 inch center hole sized for standard barbells and many budget dumbbell handles, as opposed to the 2 inch hole on Olympic plates. Standard bars are usually lighter, thinner, and rated for less weight than Olympic bars, which is part of why standard plate and bar combinations are common starter kits.
For a first apartment setup on a limited budget, a standard bar and plate combo can be lighter to carry, easier to store, and cheaper than an Olympic setup, which suits someone just building basic strength before committing to heavier lifts. The narrower sleeve also means the bar itself typically weighs less, which matters if you are moving it in and out of storage often.
When buying, confirm the hole diameter before adding plates from a different set or a hand-me-down bar, since a mismatch means the plates simply will not fit. A common mistake is buying a standard bar expecting to upgrade later with Olympic plates already owned, which forces buying a second full set instead of adding onto the first.
