Bumper plate
A weight plate made of dense rubber so it can be dropped from overhead without damaging the floor or bar, with matching diameter across a set.
A bumper plate is a solid rubber, or rubber-coated, weight plate built to absorb impact when a barbell is dropped from a lift like a clean or overhead press. Every plate in a set shares roughly the same 450mm diameter regardless of weight, so a loaded bar sits at a consistent height off the floor whether it holds 10 pounds or 45 pounds per side.
In an apartment, bumper plates matter less for protecting the bar and more for reducing the chance of cracking tile or denting a wood floor if a lift is missed. They do not, by themselves, solve noise, since a dropped bar still sends a thud through the floor to anyone below or beside you.
When buying, check the hole diameter matches an Olympic bar's 2 inch sleeve, and confirm the actual weight tolerance, since cheaper bumpers can vary noticeably from their stated weight. A common mistake is assuming bumper plates are quiet by nature. Pair them with a thick interlocking mat if you train above another unit, and avoid dropping loaded bars as a habit rather than an occasional miss.
