Start with the load range and the size of its increments, because that pair tells you what the vest is for. Vests listed at 6 to 16 pounds or 6 to 30 pounds are built around small removable packets and suit walking, rucking and bodyweight circuits where you want to add a little at a time; 20, 30 and 40 pound vests are strength tools for pull-ups, dips and step-ups. A wide range is only useful if the weights come out in small pieces, so look at how many packets make up the total rather than at the headline figure. As a starting point, most people begin around five to ten percent of bodyweight and add slowly, since the load lands on the spine and shoulders rather than being carried by the legs alone. Fit is the criterion that decides whether you keep using it. A vest that does not cinch tight against the torso bounces on every step, and bounce is both uncomfortable and the reason vests get abandoned; look for adjustable side straps and a length that clears the hips so it does not ride up when you bend. Weight distribution front and back matters for the same reason. Reflective strips are worth having if you walk near roads at dusk. Iron shot packets sit flatter than sand, and camouflage prints do nothing.
